Paula’s boots squished into the icy slush outside the restaurant. She’d never been in the Schnitzel Palace, but she figured it was time to give it a shot. Underneath the standard “Help Wanted” sign that had been in the window for years, a new sign had appeared. It was written in German in flowery traditional letters: “25% off if you order in German.” The warmth of the restaurant blasted Paula in the face, fogging her glasses. She attempted to comb the sleet out of her long brown hair with her hand and wiped her glasses on the edge of her svelte t-shirt. A plump young woman in a traditional German Dirndl that made her look twenty pounds heavier guided her to a table and handed her a menu. Kim used to feel in sync with her body. It got her up when she wanted to get up, it carried her through her rigorous daily exercise regimen, and it thrived under her sensible diet of vegetables and lean meats. It was basically effortless for Kim to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Now, her body was fighting her at every turn. Even something as simple as waking up in the morning had become a struggle. Before, Kim would leap out of bed every day at 5:30, sometimes even a few minutes before her alarm went off. She’d run for almost an hour before heading back to the apartment for a quick shower before work. Now she was lucky if she didn’t sleep through her 7:45 alarm altogether. No matter how early she went to sleep, waking up felt like returning from the dead. Most days it took over an hour for her to fully recover. Abby and Kim sat in Kim’s bedroom. A few carefully curated trinkets from Kim’s travels in Europe sat on a black pressboard nightstand, and a collection of neat books sat in alphabetical order by author on the oaken desk that came with the apartment. Late afternoon sunlight streamed in through the window over the desk. Abby sat on the practical teal blue bedspread; her hands spread behind her as she watched Kim pace in front of the floor-length mirror hanging on her closet door. “Kim, stop it. You are not fat!” Abby said. “That’s easy for you to say,” Kim said as she kneaded her new folds. By any reasonable standard she was still relatively slim, but her stomach had lost its definition and was starting to poke out. Tiny love handles were starting to form at her sides. Kim felt exposed sitting there in that paper gown. Exposed and disgusting. She played nervously with her long black ponytail as she waited for the doctor to enter with the results. Over a decade of rigid discipline from her strict Japanese father had taught her to sit up straight, but on the exam table she couldn’t help but slouch. The extra fifteen pounds she carried around her waist was rolling up on itself, and she winced every time her fat stomach touched her gown in a new place. Kim hadn’t changed her eating habits or her exercise routine. She ran three miles every single day; in fact, she was currently training for a half marathon. She ate well and tried to get enough rest. I could never have imagined reaching a number as crazy as this one, but here we are! I think I can count this as an early birthday gift haha, but really, thank you all for watching and supporting me throughout the years. Hey all, Been thinking about doing this for a bit and I figured I'd give it a whirl: I'll be offering commissions on a trial basis and seeing how it works out for me. I'm excited to get more involved in the community and see what everyone comes up with. Rules (please read before sending inquiries) I only do writing commissions. No art commissions. I reserve the right to refuse any commission at any time for any or no reason. I do not accept commissions from anyone under 18 I will not start writing until I receive payment. I reserve the right to post commissioned stories on dA or elsewhere unless you specifically ask me not to. I retain the copyright to commissioned stories.
